The International Budo University (IBU) is private sports university in Chiba prefecture, offers a unique opportunity for students interested in immersive martial arts training alongside academic studies. Established in 1984, IBU focuses on physical education, with a particular emphasis on Budo, the traditional Japanese martial arts-karate, judo, kendo, kyudo, shorinji kempo and naginata.


WHAT DO THEY OFFER?

IBU offers 3 types of academic programme pathways - undergraduate, postgraduate and a specialized Budo Specialization Program catering specifically to international students.


UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMME


Under the Faculty of Physical Education , it has 2 departments: 

  • Department of Physical Education 

  • Department of Budo / Martial Arts


Each department in the undergraduate programme offers a different academic course (specialisation).


1. Department of Physical Education 

  • Athletics

  • Sports Management 

  • Health Science

  • Coaching Science

  • Sports Trainer

  • Sports Education


2. Department of Budo / Martial Arts

  • Martial Arts (7 types of martial arts)

  • Martial Arts Education

Their undergraduate curriculum offers two study pathways where students can pursue the normal route  or teaching profession (some subjects include teaching skills).



GRADUATE SCHOOL

Similar to any university master's programme, The University offers three research areas for in-depth study at master's degree level:


  • Budo and Sporting Culture

  • Health and Sports Science

  • Budo and Sports Coaching Science



SPECIAL COURSE- BUDO SPECIALIZATION PROGRAMME (For Foreigners)

This one-year program is likely the most attractive option for international students seeking an intensive Budo experience. While the university's English website may be light on specifics, it emphasizes the importance of some Japanese language proficiency (at least N4 level on the Japanese Language Proficiency Test).

According to them, this programmme was created in 1994 and the aim is for

"contributing to the international promotion of Budo culture. International students study together with Japanese undergraduate students over one year, learning Budo practice and theory, Japanese language and culture."

The fees 

  • Application Fee: 10,000 yen

  • Admission Fee: 100,000 yen

  • Tuition Fee: 500,000 yen

  • Check-up/Insurance: 10,990 yen
